Why are deposits required (and sometimes non-refundable)?

Deposits are safety measures for service providers that ensure their time and products are not wasted on unserious orders or appointments. If an appointment gets booked without the committed intent to show up, it unnecessarily takes the slot away from others who may have needed it and been ready. (Imagine being scheduled for work and promised that you will get paid for it, but when you’re all ready and there, they tell you to go back home. That’s what it’s like :( There are other productive things you could have done in that time and time is money, right?)
